Pain-Free Auto Transport

October 10, 2011

Finding the best auto transport company for vehicles can be intimidating. It is a kind of service that car owners don’t use quite often, which makes it even more difficult to know what to look for and what to ask. Although there are many factors to consider, the types of trucks and trailers used during transport is one of the more important things to think about.

There are two main types of trailers used for car transport services. The open and enclosed trailers are the two chief types of auto cargo transportation. As implied, the open trailer subjects the cars to outside elements while the enclosed transporter offers protection.

Tractor trailers or hotshots are the frequent modes of vehicle transportation. Both enclosed and open types of trailers can either carry tractor trailers or hotshots. Choosing one over the other has its pros and cons.

A type of truck used to haul cargos called a hotshot are smaller than trailers. Hotshots are a unique mode of transportation since their size only allows for the transport of one car per haul. Because they are only shipping one car, they do not have the delay of waiting to fill spots so the delivery turnaround is quicker.

Although, hauling vehicles using hotshots can cost more in the long run. The cost of shipping is encumbered strictly by the single car owner. A car owner will be able to have their vehicle delivered right on their doorstep because hotshots are smaller and can navigate tight areas.

Tractor trailers have the capacity to transport anywhere from three to twelve automobiles at once depending on the attachment size. Of Course, it is cheaper for the customer if more vehicles are shipped at once because the cost will be distributed evenly. For cost effective service, auto transport companies need to fill their trailer causing a delay in service because they need to collect enough vehicles.

One disadvantage of tractor trailers is that they cannot drive though residential areas, especially those with tight streets. To obtain their car, a client may have to travel to a pick-up area elsewhere to meet the tractor trailer. This could prove to be a nuisance to certain clients depending on their preferences.

In certain cases, such as a car being too big to fit into a hotshot, tractor trailers can carry a single vehicle. Despite individual preferences or car features such as size or modifications, car transport agencies can arrange a solution. Although more costly, an advantage of shipping your automobile this way is the additional security.

There are different schools of thought on whether it is better to store a vehicle on the upper or lower level of a tractor trailer. Cars situated on the lower level may be vulnerable to leakage of oil or fluid from cars loaded on the upper level. However, more exposure to outside surroundings and elements will be subjected to cars on the top decks.
